As the four sail on, the Duke invents a way they can travel during the day light, so they disguise Jim in blue paint, and label him with a sign that reads, "SICK ARAB- BUT HARMLESS WHEN NOT OUT OF HIS HEAD."

The con men scout the areas around them for another job. Huck and the king head for a steamboat and meet a man who tells them all about Peter Wilks' death and fortune. The man walks on with Huck and the king, as the king asks all sorts of questions about the situation. When they get to the steamboat, the mad boards and the king sends Huck to fetch the duke. The men then pose as the deceased's brothers, Harvey and William. They go into Wilks' town weeping and crying over their loss. The scam is horrid and inhumane, and even Huck is ashamed beyond belief.
